The Chinese Tea Festival
After the ceremony ceremony, or occasionally the next day, the newlyweds serve drink to their parents. This is a symbolic movement to show appreciation and respect for the love and support they have received throughout their lives from their families and predecessors. The couple also offers their parents red envelopes filled with money ( also called hong bao ) as a symbol of good luck.
This entertaining custom can be carried out either before or after the wedding ceremony. During the procession, the bridegroom and his posse will light firecrackers, strike gongs, and have lanterns and banners to ward off evil spirits and welcome their new wedding. The groom and his entourage are typically denied a view of the bridal home until they turn in adequately crimson envelopes or new bao to fulfill their hosts when they arrive at the bride’s home.
This is a lovely way to honor and appreciate a husband and wife’s cherished partnership. The couple’s objectives for prosperity and happiness will be kept at the vanguard during each round of the spiritual fire.
